The special exemption from military service. accorded to miners has been abolished by the Spanish govennment, probably as a result of the recent strikes in tho Spanish mining industry, which have been backed by their fallw workers. This decree was announced on 26th October by Mamel Fraga Iribarne, Minister of Information, who added that the govermment was not considering lifting the ban on strikes, The Asturian miners have been on strike throe times during the past 16 months and havo repeatedly expressed their hostility tewards the fascist dictatorship of General Franco, The miners have shown their opposition and contempt for the state-run Spanish trade unions, the so-called “sindicatos verticales", which group workers, together with employers and technicians according to the branches of industry or trade.
