What is here
The magazines, bulletins and booklets of the International Marxist Group (IMG), the British section of the Fourth International, and of the groups that came before it: the International Bulletin and The Bulletin of the International Group (1961–63), The Week (1964–68), World Politics (1965–67), the theoretical journal International (1968–84, both series), the women’s paper Socialist Woman (1969–78), Africa in Struggle (1975–78), and the IMG’s internal documents and pamphlets. Each publication is kept as its own section, and every article and issue links the scan it was read from.
Not here: the IMG’s newspapers — Black Dwarf, Red Mole, Red Weekly, Socialist Challenge and Socialist Action — which are to have an archive site of their own. The 1985–87 International — a journal of Marxism in the Labour Party is on the Socialist Outlook archive.
Where the scans come from
Every scan is held by the Encyclopedia of Trotskyism On-Line at the Marxists Internet Archive, and many of them were made by Red Mole Rising (Rob Marsden). The exception is the IMG’s internal documents and Socialist Woman, scanned from copies held privately; those scans are kept in the Red Mole archive, not online. This archive links each article to its scan there, opened at the page where the machine reading put it.
How the text was made, and how far to trust it
- The Bulletin and The Week were duplicated from typed stencils. Their text was read with Tesseract, which handles typescript better than the alternatives we tested, and cut into articles at the typed capital headings. It has not been corrected. Expect misread words throughout, and titles that are often garbled where an issue printed no contents list. Every article says so.
- World Politics was read the same way (Tesseract) and is likewise uncorrected.
- Africa in Struggle was read with Apple’s Vision engine and cut into articles by hand from the issues’ contents; the text itself is uncorrected.
- The IMG’s internal documents are typescript, read with Tesseract and uncorrected; each is one page here, with the scan’s page numbers marked in the text.
- International was typeset. Its text was read by machine and then tidied in August 2026 (columns reconstructed, wording unchanged), and cut into articles from each issue’s contents.
Accurate enough to read and to search, but quote from the scan, not from here. If you find a mistake, please report it.
