from a Scottish reader Many organisations have criticised the Government's recently published Transport Bill because they say that Seottish industry will suffer through © higher charges caused by the Bill's pr@Yisions. The latest protest has come from the Scottish Council (Bevelopment ond Industry). The secretary of the Council's. transport committee said in a statement on January 4: "It isclear that little regard has been given to the Government's concept of regional development." The transport committee's main objection is to the special charge on the movement of "abnormal loads" which would range from ls to as mich as £15 a mile. It feels that the increase would bear particualry heavily on the more remote development areas, thus offsetting the benefits of the Regional Employment Premium und other development area measures, and also om companies engaged in heavy engineering. One company, Bruce Peebles Industries, has submitted that its main products, transformers weighing from 93 to 109 tons, going by road from Ediburgh to various English destinations would cost the company an extra £710 to @21,400 in transport costs, or increases of 51 to 68 per cent.
