Made his reputation as an outstanding flour-milling engineer with the Stockport firm of Simon Engineering. In 1954 was appointed chairman of Electrical and Musical Industries at a low point in its fortunes, which have steadily improved since then. Nineteen hundred and fifty-four profits were £2.1m, and in 1962-63 they were £7.8m. but with the help of the Beatles they soared to f11.8m. in 1963-64. E.M.I.’s profits are derived from records and electronics and it is presumably the latter interests which led to his joining H.S. board.
