The Economist calculated in its last week's issue changes in wage . rates and prices in the last 15 months. It concluded: "During the past 15 months weekly wage rates and prices have both risen by about 5%. The increase in the real value of money incomes will therefore have come entirely from the upward drift in earnings..." It went on to say that the budget would probably add 1% to the cost of living. Thus trade unionists have had a powerful argument presented to them for wage increases from a rather unexpected source!
