U.S. officials in Washington announced on July 11 that the Defence (sic) Department had placed orders with eight American chemical companies for another £20 million worth of "defoliant" for use in the Vietnam war. The chemicals, used to destroy food crops as well as to strip the jungle, have caused severe damage to South Vietnam's vital rice harvest when used in the past. In Saigon, U.S. Defence Secretary Robert McNamara concluded his tour of South Vietnam yesterday with a Press conference at which he said U.S. policy was still to provide commanders in Vietnam with the troops they needed.
