from Russ Stetler Le Monde reported on October 13, 1967 that Hugo Blanco's sentence of 25 years, which he received before a military court last year, was confirmed by the Supreme Military Court of Peru, to which he had appealed, Hugo Blanco was captured in 1963 and accused of killing three members of the civil guard in the department of Cuzoo. As The Week reported last week, the prosecutor demanded the death penalty when Blanco's appeal was heard. On October 10th, five hundred demonstrators marched in front of the Peruvian Embassy in Paris to protest against the treatment of Hugo Blanco. On the same day, twenty-five trade union militants and leaders were arrested in Uruguay. The Uruguayan Government had enacted ‘immediate security measures' the night before, and acted in accordance with the new regulations. The leaders of many unions held deliberations, of which nothing was revealed save the decision to maintain the general strike set for this Wednesday for all over Uruguay, despite the security measures.
