Nottingham City Education Committee's decision to cut back on the school meals service has come under heavy fire. Following Ken Coatés'sstatenents in th Press to the effect that parents might have a right of legal redress, there has been a series of protests against the action. At the Fernwood School, Wollaton, parents held a protest meeting and said they would take the matter further if their children were continued to be turned away. In the City Council meeting on Monday, Councillor Peter Price (who recently won his legal battle against the Labour Party NEC, but who is still refused the Labour Whip) pointed out that the 1944 Education Act clearly laid down that "on every day on which a school maintained by an Authority is open for instruction, the Authority shall provide mid-day dinners for day pupils attending the School." Following the Council meeting there was further extensive press coverage under the headline "Writs on School Meals."
