These increases are necessary to pay for the higher costs of building urgently needed new council dwellings.

The rising costs are due to high interest rates and the high price of land. (This means that well over $ a tenant's rent,, or more than 10/=- in the £ goes to the money lenders). WE SAY - The Council has over £1,000,000 in reserve which can be used NOW to prevent the July increase.

The cost of building new dwellings, which benefits all the community, should not be borne by existing council tenants.

The Council should fight the Government to make them end the high interest rackets and land sharks whose profits are not frozen. No further rent increases while the Government refuses to tackle the housing problem.

The system of Housing Finance needs altering.

The Government spends £2,009,900,000 a year on ARMS and less than a very small part of this on HOUS#S.
