Propaganda is a very powerful weapon, otherwise we would not have the fantastic situation in which well-meaning people, many of them supporters of good left wing causes, sign such misinformed statements as appeared in today's Daily Express and Daily Mirror, It is perfectly clear that what we have seen this week has been a well-prepared preventive attack by Israel, This fact alone would justify the stand that The Week has taken on the liddle East crisis, namely, that Israel is, in essence, both an imperialist creation and an instrument for imperialist pressure on the Arab liberation movement. Politicians are now calling for a permanent Western presence in the Middle East, to protect Israel and safeguard supplies of oil and the Suez Canal. This is nothing more than old style imperialism: the use of military force to protect imperialist interests, All socialist must oppose these moves no matter what the outcome of the immediate fighting,
