A detailed survey in the current issue of US News & World Re places in perspective the myth of the "Red Menace” in South East Asia, In trying to maintain this myth as justification for escalation of the Vietnam war, the US is to some degree in conflict with the necessity to assure the American public of the military practicability of such escalation. Now that the hawks are in the ascendant, the emphasis is on the military realities of the situation. ‘The article in question, which is illustrated by the map reproduced above, remarks pointedly that ... "the mainland was spared during the Korean War. The message to Peking is clear: Not this time." One would feel safer if, indeed, the myth was nearer to the reality. The only way it could become so would be for the Soviet Union to make orystal clear its own intentions in support of the Chinese and Vietnamese revolutions.
