from a Tyneside reader The Executive of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions, meeting in York last week, turned down the Geddes Committee proposals that the number of unions engaged in shipbuilding and reneiring should be cut from 15 to 5. The idea was turned down as unrealistic as most of the unions concerned have more members in employment outside the industry than in the shipyards. Dut, as an alternative to union mergers, the Confederation will set up a special committee to handle negotiations with the Shipbuilding Employers' Federation.
