'Students have been systematically dehumanised, deemed incompetent to regulate their own lives, socially, politically, and academically.! The movement began 'in late 1964 at the Berkely campus of the University of California during the Free Speech Movement revolt.... the F.S.M. urged sympathetic instructors to join in a 'free university within a university! offering informal classes in such subjects as techniques of civil disobed~ dance.se.ee. ‘While some of the universities are little more than radical discussion groups, several are based on the central New Left idea of ‘counter institution! setting up a protest organisation parallel to an established one, in order to expose and eventually change ite In free universities, most courses are based on subjects or approaches not usually found in regular schools.sees 'The unincorporated university, Uhine U, in the University of Colorado in Boulder is one such counter institution.... Founded by five students, Ininc U, this spring, will offer more than 49 six week seminars, taught primarily by regular faculty members and graduate students.
