"Rationalisation" in Japanese coal mines, mine closures, dismissals and intensified labour have aggravated the sufferings of miners. Labour accidents have been mounting. Last year saw 641 killed and 45,000 wounded. In other words, one out of every 250 coal miners were killed and one out of every three suffered major or minor injuries.
