The moderate success enjoyed by the Left at this Blackpool 1965 Conference are not enough to justify jubilation. Nor are they so limited as to justify despair. Labour's first real Conference after the election of a Labour Governnent could, in the nature of things, do no other than register a sem rics of victories for the platforn. What is surprising about Blackpool 1965 is not that the platform has car« ried the day. Rather it is that, despite the post-victory cuphoris, the influence of the Left upon the course of events is so great. Let us ‘nake no nistake about one fact. The Loft, as © coherent forge con~ parable with the Right, which commands both apparetus and establishment, et present docs not exist. Every delegate who is disappointed with the results of this conference should realise that if the Left has not succeeded at this Conference, this is because the Left is not strong enough to do better, Every delegate who wants to sce Socialist victories next year nust take his start fron this point. The strength of the pletform represents the weakness of the floor. Conference successes can only reflect strength in the country. Those who wish socialist victorics next year must start their work now. The weakness of the Left is: 4) Its sections in the constitucncics, trede nuaions, perlicnent and intellectual circles cre isolated and out of touch with one another. "ce must connence to remedy this in the soming year. 2) Its members in constituencics, trade union, parlignacnt and intellectual circles, are all fighting different battles in different ways, oat different times and without proper gceordination. Tyis needs to bu remedicd too. As we leave the Confcrence, let us retain this though in our minds. There are plenty of socialist victories ahead of us. ‘To win them we need to mobilisc our strength. Unity, co-operation and common purposc, these are what we need in the coming veer. Let us sot about the preparation now.
