The futility of the boyoott of consumer foods from South Africa is highlighted in the report of the Sheffield Telercraph City Editor on August 18 that Carreras, the South African based cicarette firm, had profits last year totalling @£4 million. The firm,which produces many brands of tippeed cigarettes including Guards, thus increased its stock to £368.6 million, and the dividend from 1364 to 164%. If the labour movement is to be successful in imposing a boycott of South African ecods, it is clear that piecemeal biycotts in the shops (even if adhered to all by every active member of the novement ) will not be enough. The only way to impose 2a boycott that will really affect the South African economy is to stop the goods actually entering the country. Dockers in Australie and Scandinavia have recently refused to handle foods from South Africa, Dockers in this country should be encouraged to follow this wp. Then messrea, Carreras and Verwoerd would really start worrying,
