The annual conference of the Amalgamated Union of Building trade Workers will discuss a large number of motions calling for the scrapping of the long-term pay pact entered into last year, and instead asking fér- _ campaign for a big wage increase. Some branches mention the figures of 1/6 an hour, othe for ifm. The leaders of the union, which is the second largest in the industry, voted against the agreement when it was negotiated. However, they accepted the majority view of the National Federation of Building Trades Operatives. The main criticisms of the agreement are that it widened the differential between craftsmen and labourers, and that it hinders the union in pursuing wage claims at a very favourable time. If the motions are passed it will pose a 'constitutional' problem - the AUBTW delegates are bound by majority decisions in the NFBTO.
