A general strike in protest against rising prices and the scarcity of essential commodities was held in Calcutta on May 20th, according to a Times of India report of May 21st. The strike was orderly despite police provocations amd many arrestse The police used tear gas on at least two occasionse 351 people arrested on the day of the strike joined some 1,500 people already detained "as a preventive measure ."
