The scan: The Week v1 no18.pdf (PDF, Marxists Internet Archive, opens at this page)

Uncorrected machine reading. This text was read by machine (Tesseract OCR) from a scan of a stencilled typescript and has not been corrected. Expect misread words; titles in particular are often garbled where the issue printed no contents list. Quote from the scan, not from this page.
How this article was cut and titled: capitals heading; heuristic; title from the OCR of the heading.

Thanks very much for your copier of The week and the help you heve given my Committee. I would like to comment briefly on Feter Price's criticism of the Labour OND statement. Pera. (1) The only reference te the United Nations is the sentence:- "The United Nationa must b® brought more and more into international relationships." This dees not man “unconditional" suport for every activity or decision of the United Nations. IMG is, cf course, en imperfect instrument to funeticn as « world govermmant, but it is the best medium avails'le ta bring conflicts to the conference table and its vclice forces are probably the most suitable to ran agreed demarcation zones. The present United “ations structure and functiona are very different from the originsl pattern. Fara, (2) just seta up skittles to knock then down, It is hardly responsible criticism to alter the context of a sentence by leaving out words and then slamming the remainder. To deduced that the statement:~- "The immediate danger to the peace of the world, as we see it, arises now not se much from the ectivities of the two world powers, as from the nurrow nationalist ambitions of some of the smaller powers, We must at all costs prevent these powers from controllinz or using nuclear weapons" ~ coming from a Labour CND Committee, could reasonebly be interpreted as relating te the revolutionary activity of emerging nations, rather than to the danger ef proliferation of nuclear powers, rather suggests a subjective antagonism te tha general line of the CND Labour Committee, rather than an objective analysis of the statement. Fersonally, I stand for co-existence, dut net as synonym for collaberation. The conflict between the haves and the have-nots, between the owners of capital and the wage earner, is continuous and fundamental; but this fight for human atatus, as distinct from boss-worker atatus must be carried on by appropriate methods suitable to the immediate situation. It must not be fought out with nuclear weapons. #ith Best wishes, Youre fraternally, Len Youle (treasurer of the Ledour SED Committee)

A suggestion for The ‘ieek: Could we have a bibliegraphy of "Socialist Booka" wien they are published? 1 mean ones printed by sxall publishers (Plough i'rese, 1.5. Peking, Us. Sacielist Parties). I order political booxs for cur library and have 2 hell of a job trying te keep track of these odd publishers. I am sure others are in the same beat. 4&4 lot of infornation not currentiy feund in the "Sree Press" im migeed - and not available to the public. David Lane (Biruingham)

Editer's Comment:- fe think comrade Lane has a food point here. dae will, in the naxt issue or so, commence this service. There are considerable difficulties involved and we will welcome any help and suggestions from readers.
