She is Mrs. Amelia P. Boynton, who qualified February 29. Sho is the first Nogro to run for Congress from Alabama sinco the Reconstruction period after the Civil Ware She is the first Negro woman to evor mako a try for the office.

Under tho "9-8" system, each of the old nine congressional districts nominates a candidate. The district winners will face a June 2 run-off to determine the eight party nominees. Despite this although there are 860,073 white voters in Alabama there are only 66,009 Negro voters.
