CASTRO RAPS THE CUBAN PRESS by Syd Williamson (Iavana)

Thore was a reception committee welcoming tho the arrival of tho Cuban fishermen (captured by the U.S. Navy) in Havana oarlier this month — Fidel was, of course, prosent ond a newspaper man started questioning Fidel about what he thought of the American Government, otce, Fidel stopped him in his tracks whon he stated that instead of talking only about the illegal seizure of the boats tho press should also be writing about the future of the Cuban fishing industry, While on the subjoct Fidel said ho would like to sco the truth being printed in the presse This had recontly given out figures to the effect that in some” sectors of the fishinng industry output had doubled — which was incorr ecte Fidel stated that the press should not cheat the people nor be tho willing tools for such deceit, Thoy should check up all information they recoivoe

This shows in my opinion that whilst generally supporting the Government the press in Cuba will be oncouraged to bo independent from the states. Ed, Notes Our correspondent ended his lotter’ by asking us to do all in power to support the Ban tho Domb Movement, for the sake of the Cuban people.
