Most entries in the Index are made under general headings, so that it is useful for people who require aselection of information on a broad subject, Thus, there is no entry under "Raleigh Industries" (for the strike), but if "strikes" is referred to, it leads the reader to "Trade Disputes", where there is the sub-heading "Engimeering" followed by a list of strikes in enginpering and allied industries, "Raleigh Industries" will be found’after a number of successive references to the strike. For example 4/5 signifies "issue No 4, page 5". It should be noted that there is a hyphen after each of the references that follow: this ties them all together and indicates that they all refer to the subject that follows in brackets, in this case "Raleigh Industries",
The Index is different from a conventional book index in that it is intended particularly for people who want to collect together facts on a special subject (for a pamphlet, speech or discussion). This makes it a little more difficult for inquirers who just want to look up a specific subject. To have made enbries directly for specific subjects (e.g. Raleigh Industries) as well womld have made the index very much longer.
