Only one delegate to Congress voted against a motion from the Civil and Public Servants Association (CPSA) which called for the revision of Scottish law on homosexuality to bring it into line with legislation presently applicable in England. In Scotland even private homosexual acts between male adults are illegal (see Scottish Socialist number two). Despite the near unanimity of the vote, the large round of applause which greeted a speech by a Boilermakers' delegate against the motion indicates the hard ideological battle still to be fought before the underlying backwardness on sexual questions behind the liberal facade is finally rooted out of the labour movement.
