In 1974 Matthew Lygate appeared in

court charged with bank robbery. He was

a member of the Workers Party of Scotland.

It was alleged at the trial that the money from the robbery was to be devoted to

furthering the cause of Scottish Independence.

The judge sent him away for 30 years.

On the 4th April Thomas Hickman also appeared in court charged with bank

robbery. Like Lygate he had used violence

in the raid.

Hickman is an old Etonian and a former

major in the guards. So was his trial judge Mervyn Griffiths-Jones.

Hickman walked out of court with a

suspended sentence.

Judge Griffith-Jones said "a jail sentence …......would do neither yourself nor the public any good".

Which all goes to show the benefits of a good education.

Eton.
