A response by Edinburgh Overseas Students Action Group to fascist intimidation of the Edinburgh Sikh Community this summer led to the setting up of an Edinburgh Anti-Racist Committee (EARC). Since its formation it has been building support in the local labour movement and student movement for an ongoing campaign to expose the lies of the racists that immigration and immigrants are ar the root of the working class's problems and to organise against racism in the media and labour movement.
When the anti-racist committee organised a public meeting in a local Sikh Temple, over 120 people turned up to discuss how to go about fighting racism EARC has organised support for two in the locality. Since this meeting the major demonstration against racism —
in Blackburn in September and the massive Labour Party/TUC demonstration in London in November.
Involved in the committee just now are delegates and individuals from NALGO, Labour Party, NUS, Scottish Minorities Group, Overseas Students Action Group, Working Womens Charter Group, the SIP and others. The two key tasks facing the EARC now are investigating racism (in all its aspects) locally and mobilising support for a national fightback against racism.
