Mr. John Whitman, 10 August 1976 7 Madeira Place, Edinburgh 7.

Dear John,

Many thanks for your letter informing me of the meeting to discuss establishing a new journal to be produced by members of the SLP.

I will be unable to attend the meeting as the South Ayrshire SLP is holding its rally and field day on 28 August to raise cash for the election fund. However, I wish your meeting well.

There is a need for education and in-depth reporting of critical issues, and for analysis of trends in Scottish, European and International events. If your suggested magazine can accomplish these ebjectives or, given how slender are your resources, make a contribution in that direction, it will be worthwhile.

From the draft proposals I was pleased to note the recognition that some editorial views would not correspond with the views held by all members of the SIP, and that part of your purpose is to stimulate debate. I am sure you will ruffle a few feathers, but I think that given all criticism is fair and non-personalised and that a genuine effort is made to see, and give space to. differing views no harm will come to anyone or the party and that indeed, all will benefit. If it can be of any help at any time just contact me.

Yours sincerely,

JIM.
