A confidential intelligence report from General Chaudhuri, Chief of the Indian Army Staff, has not altered the British view that Chinese activities on the Indian frontier do not indicate an immediate Likelihood of ronewed fighting. General Chaudhuri returned to Delhi after cutting short a tour of North America last Sunday.
His report confirms that there is, indeod, a threat on the frontier, particularly in the areas adjoining the North—last Frontier agency and the Chumbi valley between Sikkim and Ehutan, Tho Chinese are also ropor ted to have reoccupied the 14-mile domilitarised zone in Ladakh, 1,000 miles to the north-west. But in the Whitehall view the threat is not new, and the Chineso have had the capacity — though not the obvious motive — to renew their attack for several months past.
