A survey commicsioned by the 1! stry of Housing from the Central Office of Information gives an estimate of how many slums there are likely to bea in the coming yoars. Today some 600,000 housing units are officially dofined as slums, the survey estimates that betwoon 1960 and 1965 210,000 units would become slums, But in the next ton years = 1965 to 1975 — tho rate will be drastically increased. In this poriod some 1,100,000 are expected to become unfit. Tha next 15 years would see another 2,900,000 units go the same way. Houses usually have a life of about 100 years and this hugo increase in tha number ofhouses becoming unfit arises because of the boom in house building which took place in 1860s, especially in tho Iidlands and northern England, Those facts aro powerful ammunition for the supporters of the housing campaigns
