eeeseestO Lar, despite all the Chancellor's incentives for the develo— pment areas, it has not (improved). The table shows the unemployment figures and percentages, and the mimbere of unfilled vacancies, for the various regions comp— ared with a year ago.

Two facts stand out. First, the remarkable gap between the 5 regions of southern and central lngland on the one hand and the rest of the country on the other, The first group has an average unemploymnnt rate of around 13% and nearly as many unfilled vacancies as people out of work, In northern and north-western Sngland, Waies and Scotland, on the other hand, the unemploymnet rate is more than 3H, and for every urifilled vacancy there are six-and-e-lalf people out of work. If Worthern Ireland were added to this second group, the discrepancy would be even more marked,

The second sector that stands out is that, compared with this time last year, four out of the five high-unemployment regions (all,in fact, except Wales) have experienced a 'warsehing of their unemploymzunt rate, while none of the more favoured regions have done so the gap has tended to widenssecsse
