in articlo’appoering in last woeks (June 7th) Railway Review makes it plain that the railwaymen are not at all pleased with C.D.5,'s attitude to the Beeching Plan. In a front page articlo entitled "An Honest Attempt" they attacked the ¢.D.5, atatement that if the unions want to quarrel with the Plan they should have a go at the Government. But at the same time, “industrial action in this case would be open to all the objections against its use for political ends." Commenting on this "mixture of supsercilious advice and pretentious expertise" Railway Roview says "So what, The writer seams to be unaware that the N.U.R, hac been carrying on a campaign against the Government's proposals for a very long time." In reply to to C.D.eS.'s claim that "Dr. Besching did no more than faithfully carry out the terms of reference set rake eg gee by the Tory Governmont" and that "whatever tho fmilts of the r + is an honest attempt to adapt a railway system created in the 1peheoe o urgent industrial needs of the 20th" they pose the very relev ent question "do they not agree with the Govarnment? And what a re they doing calling thomselves socialists when the Labour Party has come out so strongly against the Government" When 0.D.5. come out with the statement that "The railway unions ought not to give the impression that they are trying to resist the course of history and are opposed at any price to change" Railway Review can be excused drawing the conclusion that "It is time the ¢, .5, wound itself up, clarified ita thoughts, or changed its name,"
