Todor Zhivkov, head of the Bulgarian communist regime, recently warned of the danger of unemployment unless tha basis of the engineering industry was sufficiently expanded. Ina speech on the occasion of a conference of the engineering indus= try, Zhivkov said it was essential that "the inevitable unemploy— uent", resulting from the mechanisation of agriculture be averted. In this connection, he predicted that in 1980, not many more than one million people would be employed in agriculture. Even if it were possible to find employment for unskilled workers in the textile industry, the building industry and elsewhere, jobs would still have to be found for at least half a million people.
