Like the terrible weather which has been plaguing us, revolutionary processes do not recognise cclondar divisions, We can, therefcre, oxpect many of the processas which have developed throughout 1962 to continue into 1963. On the four major fronts of the world revolutionary process: the political ravolution in the worker's states, tha colonial revolution, the strugzle of the workers in the industrialised capitalist countrios, and the organisation of tha worker's vanguard, progress has boon made in 1962,
In the worker's states, the Khrushchovites have continued their so-called destalinisation, and now recoil in horror at signs of "frankenateiniem" (to coin a word) as demonstrated by the revolt of the intcllectuals, who havo used the destalinisation campaign to strike out for artistic freadom, Party leaders solemnly say that abstract painting, ote. is a threat to the Soviet State, roally meaning that too much artistic freedom is likely to be infectous and spread to othar sections of the Russian people who cculd overthrow the bureaucracy. These strictures have been made before; what is diffarent this time is that the intellectuals are fighting back and quoting Lenin in their defence, World famous figuros such as Bhrenburg, Shostakoviteh and Yevtushenki are involved and it- will be extremely difficnl+ for Khrushchov and co. to clamp down. In 1963 we may vory well sce this movement deepen into the first real public-oppositicn to the Sevist buresucracy sincsa the time of the Left Opposition.
The most important aspect of tho end of the Stalinist monolith is the Sino/ Soviet dispute, Whilst the Chinese CP leadership makes very valid criticisms of the policies of the Soviet leadership and the Western Zurepean CP's, they plirsue and support an opportunist policy in relation to Indonesia and Gther countrios. Wa make the point in order to illustrate the danger. of having illusions in tha Chinese loadership, But having said this, no one con deny the tremendcusly progressive role they are playing by, to use their own words, putting the fight against rovisicnism on the agenda in every CPs 1963 will seo this fight lead te rosults indepondont of the will of the Macists. Tendencies will arise all over the world which will carry the fight for revoluticnary policies beyond the limits set by the present position of the Modists, and which will ,if Marxists do their job properly, in many cases lay the basis for mase revolutionary partios which are tho crying need in all sectors,
In the colonial revolutionary sevtor, many success wore won in 1962, but aaready there were signs of the imperialists digging thoir heels in and this, combined with the fact that overt colonial rule only persists in countriés whoero »— there is little chance of imperialism doing a deal with local stooges, will moan that the colonial revolution will tend to be more viOlent and will oncounter moro resistance, In the Portugese colonies, the little remnants of direct British colonialism ~ idon, Zanzibar, North Borneo, ete, — the strugZle will be roach 4 now high. In Southern Africa- the Ruodesias, South West Africa, and South Africa itself the beginnings of armo? ¢trugzle will develope. :
Increasing soctions of the Anti-colonialist forces are realising that the major onemy is now 'noo=colonialiam! and many more 'bonapartist 'nomalignod! regimes willl be forced along the rond Nohru is treading, The example of Cuba is inspiring 'Fidolist! movements all over Latin America, 411 thesa strugeles will be increasingly influenced by the tendency for CP's to break away from Kremlin control, first under Chinese influence and then undor the pressure of tho local revolutionary situation,
Next week's editorial will deal with the position in the advanced capitalist countries and especially Britain,
Lastly wo have tho state of the vanguard. This question is gone into in othar Journals but we can note that there have boon signs that the vanguard is advancing along the road of unity and overcoming difficulties arising from the year of isolation. Yos, 1963 looks like being a good, and busy, yoar.
